Reducing Vaccine Pain & Fever

Although our group has switched to Pediarix -- a three-in-one vaccine that saves children up to six injections, we’re still left with 15 shots in the primary series. What can parents do? One helpful measure is do give acetaminophen (eg Tylenol ) about a half-hour before your visit. Infants six months and up could receive ibuprofen (eg Motrin). This dosing can be continued for the 24 hour period following the vaccines. For dosing, see chart below:

In addition, there are some topical options. The most effective are creams that are applied 30 to 60 minutes prior to the vaccines. One is called EMLA. It is available by prescription. The other is called LMX 4%. This one works a little faster, and is available in our office for a modest fee.
